The Solenoid apply chart is this....
1st gear, A and B solenoid is on.
2nd gear, A turns off, B stays on.
3rd gear, Both are off.
4th gear, A turns on, B turns off.
usually when a solenoid goes out, you lose either 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 4th. The main problem with these transmission's are the 3/4 clutches fail. That would be my bet if you have first and second gear only. Hope that helps.
