Hmm a hydraulic winch really sounds expensive! But I guess I shouldn't cheap out on a winch.

Well, it all depends on how you plan to use it.

Hauling a truck out of waste deep gumbo is very different than hauling it up over a bank or a rock face.

They are more expensive compared to electric:

But, having used both is SAR work (well, as a hoist), there's no comparison. I'll take hydraulic any day. Run forever without overheating, constant line pull, etc.....

No way I would pay $400 for a Harbor Freight winch! If it was around $200 maybe, but still probably not.

Look at wreckers; not the little dinky 30-y.o. POSs, but the professionals. RAMSEY worm-drive. I tried a Warn xD9000i for a few years on my Bronco, and it failed to pull me out EVERY time I needed it. (No, not because I don't know how to use one; because when I get stuck enough to need a winch, I get THAT stuck.) Finally I swapped with a guy who couldn't figure out how to mount the big Ramsey on his Bronco, so now I have what I always wanted. ;)

There are as many disadvantages to rope as there are to cable, so it's a toss up: $$, maintenance, repairability, UV/heat/abrasion resistance, creep, kinks, weight, bulk, failure characteristics... I just can't afford 150' of 12K rope, so it's moot for me.

I like my Engo 12k a lot. The company stands behind its products. I had a major to me but small issue, they went over & above to make it good at no cost to me. Liked it so much, I bought another 12k for the rear
