They break...and the most common reason is people resetting them while in motion. Only supposed to reset it while completely stopped.
You can get a boneyard cluster and swap that part out; it's pretty easy. Just gotta be careful pulling your dash bezel so you don't damage it, especially around the headlight switch as 88-94 just uses tiny little screws that go into standoffs that are probably already cracked or broken.
