Yes P30 workhorse chassis, just like the UPS trucks and Fedex trucks and such.

Agreed on 80 vs 60.
Right, so whatever the upfitter put on the chassis is on them. If they went over what GM spec'd them at, any liability would be the responsibility of the upfitter.
The bottom line is a 4L80e is not weak by any means. Whoever told you that is a liar or an idiot. Or both.

There's one of those across the street, has an 8.1 in it. It's at least 30' long, so that's a lot of coach to move. I think it's old enough to have an '80 in it.
If it is an 8.1L it has an Allison, unless it has an Express van or GMT400 cab.

The only 8.1/4L80E or 4L85E combinations came in the Vans, GMT400 3500HD and the GMT800 based 2500 Avalanche and 2500 Suburbans.

Rawhide has an '80 behind his L31, and he had no trouble backing these guys up...or moving them forward when they got too far back.
And he's had no issues running loaded and towing on the highway either....
So I think an '80 can handle more... If this truck had a 7.4 or a diesel, it would still have the '80.

The 4L85E in my 97 van has not given me any issues either. It moved 15,000-16,000 lbs total weight a couple of weeks ago at 65 mph down the highway and did not once complain about it. Van drank gas at about 12 mpg, but stayed cool, had plenty of power and just motored along.

Same here. Got 11 on that Austin trip, but we could keep up with most of the traffic when we needed to. No problem getting off the line either. And mine is a stock Vortec 5.7....

Nah, you were right. You can find an 8.1/4L80 in early GMT 800 2500/3500 HD trucks. Not common, but they're out there. Hotshot company I used to drive for had 2 of them.
Not from GM they weren't. I challenge you to find a VIN with that setup OE. They do not exist. I know because I have tried to find the OE calibration for one from the GM database for a truck that got swapped from a 6.0L to an 8.1L keeping the 4L80E. I ended up segment swapping things around to make a tune for the setup.
