how bout a hood scoop?
wouldn't that pretty much be the same thing, and look cooler

yes you could do a hood scoop but you would need to make a pan to seal to the hood then make the scoop functional. you would also not want to drive in the rain or snow as it would go into the intake

Besides the whole hot air thing, I'll also point out that open element filters are just that, open element. If you're the kind that likes to go offroading and throw a lot of mud around, it might not be the best idea for you.
