if knowledge serves correct, your 2wd extended cab shaft is at the verge of being too long for a single piece. the only way you might be able to swap to a single is if you run a 5-6" aluminum shaft. i dont recall as that wasnt my expertise, i stocked all the parts, physically built the shafts and balanced them but just started getting into the physics of building them.

so best bet call your up a trusted driveshaft shop and ask them, youll need a measurement from face of your pinion to the back of your trans to have one properly built.

The newer trucks run a 1 piece driveshaft but like you said they are 5" or 6"

A friend has a 99 OBS suburban that we measured the on and it is shorter.

yeah ididn't really think about mentioning drivetrains. i've never been under a gmt400 until i got mine and been doing the work to it, so i didn't know any different. we was just thinking but are on budgets so not a lot of play for parts. thanks for all the info guys.
