Needing wiring help! getting close to fixing my problem

okay on my 89 the brake lights do not work. i replaced the brake light switch and it still didnt fix my problem. i also found the power wire going into the swich and ran a jumper wire to it. when i do this the brake light comes on and they dont go out. so i know im getting a good connection through out the entire system. im just not getting power to the switch its self. any ideas? im lost on this one.

would this have to do with a short int he steering column by chance i know if i tilt it up and down the headlights short out

Well the both are tied in together (dim running and Bright brake/turn) so I would assume.
Yay, now you get the joy of tearing it apart

do you think i should replace the box it all connects to insde the column and the turn signal lever or would it be easier just to get a whole new column out of a junk yard and replace it all
