Ignition wont turn

I have a 1990 GMC 1500 the people i bought it from had inherited it from there brother that died they knew nothing about it and the key was missing so i bought a new ignition and i put it in and it would't turn then it did once messed around with it for a long time then it worked just fine for a couple mins now it won't turn and have no idea why any suggestions?

Check if the battery has juice.

should still turn without a battery in, sounds like either the new cylinder is messed up, or possibly something in the column
