How to use 1st and 2nd gear in a 1989 gmc sierra

I have recently got a 1989 gmc sierra and i was wondering can you use 1st and 2nd gear while rolling? and on the gas. Just curious!

The engagement of 2 separate gears at one time will result in wheel stoppage. If you're rolling, I highly doubt you'll care whether 1st and 2nd gear are engaged, you'll be too busy figuring out how to avoid banging your head on the roof as you go wheels up.

He probably means with an auto and asking about the 1 and 2 gear selectors on the column.

I use first or second when in 4lo when going up & down steep hills for engine braking if I'm off-roading.
