So from shifting to reverse or drive, from park I hear a loud metal sounding *!PING*!

It doesn't happen everytime, but when is does happen it's both engine hot and cold. Could it be my u-joints or something far more sinister?

Check your U-joints! IF they are worn, they make a clunk and the driveshaft echoes the noise to sound like a "ping"

Are you parked on a hill without using the parking brake when this happens?

No, always a level, flat surface.

I'm hoping it's as simple as this!
