GMT800 2500s are this way as well, at least if they have the Allison transmission. My understanding is it's mostly to get the transmission to fit under the floor without a different floor pan stamping.

Thought it also had to do with taller frame rails?

I think the Jeep cherokee had a factory body lift once, or was this a prototype for SEMA??

Yes, that's my understanding as well. On the GMT800:

2500HD/3500 trucks got the taller frame for the Allison, paired with the 8.1/6.6TD. Taller frame is also obviously stronger.

Non-HD 2500 trucks, vans and SUVs got the standard frame with either a 4L80/85e. None of those ever got an Allison, even if they did come with an 8.1 or 6.6TD.

I'm not aware of any body lift from the factory.
