I'd say it depends on how much money you want to spend.
I've been tinkering with LS stuff for 18 years and only messed with the older SBC stuff a few times so not that knowledgeable about their different setups.
I just know a few LS setups that work great and get good gas mileage.
For instance we did a simple setup on my buddy's 98 RC 2wd.
Factory 2007 5.3, isky turbo cam (212/212 .561/.56161 114), circle D 3200 stall, 4L80E, factory 10 bolt w/ 3.42s and Detroit Trutrac.
Rear mount 76/68mm turbo @16psi
It ran 11.2@119mph and drove it everyday.
Beat the snot out of it for 6 years before he had a trans cooler line leak fluid out and burnt the trans..
I had a extended cab 1500 2wd with a 6.0/4l80e/3.42s
Front mount 75mm and ran low 12s on 8psi.
Even towed my buddy's truck to the track cause he didn't want to drive on his slicks.
Towed triple what the truck was rated for a bunch of times. Put almost 225,000 miles on that setup and never had a issue.
Simple setups that were really fun.
Most my other buddy's were fooling with the TBI stuff and tried building some 355 and 383s. They fought the TBI tuning for years before giving up.
I like the LS swaps cause I know more about them.
We never touched the rings or any of that, throw a turbo cam in and go have fun.
