I would be interested to know if you were running in power enrichment (PE) mode during those long climbs.

The engine would be (should be) running rich whenever PE is enabled, by intent.

IIRC, PE doesn't come into pay on a stock, OE tune unless the TPS is pretty "open", e.g., above 80% or 90%, and then only after the "PE delay" which is typically 5-6s.

You probably have no way of determining this without a scan tool, and it may not matter, but I'm curious all the same.

This all seems counter to Code 44 "Lean condition", but I'm wondering if it's not related.

i would definitely run copper plugs. i like AC Delcos myself, i think R43TS are stock . some of that build up on the plugs could also be oil burning from worn guides or valve seals. might be worth doing valve seals.
