Can anyone tell me what this does on a 97 chevy Cheyenne v6? Would it prevent the truck from starting if it wasn't hooked up?

Looks like the evap solenoid. It will throw a CEL, but shouldn't stop the truck from starting. The plug is rite above it, in your pic. It's the blue plug.

If it is the evap solenoid you might get some odd pressures in your gas tank after driving it for a while.

Ugh....that plug was in another spot. I pulled it off of something on the intake.....time to consult a wiring diagram lol

That 'something on the intake' is the MAP sensor - I think.
