Hello, so, I just bought a Vortec engine already carb'd and cammed. So, I'm going to be putting this into my 93 Silverado cause my 5.7 tbi is nearly shot. As it sits, it has a circle track flat tappet cam in it with an edelbrock Victor intake on it (or the like). They guy I bought it from will be keeping the cam/intake/distributor; so I know I'll need to buy those to replace them. I drive this truck a lot, like about 4 days a week. So I know it's going to be a street build, and I know I want to go roller. I have everything I need to turn it back into a roller motor. Now, this is what I'm thinking.

EFI: FiTech fuel injection (400hp kit)
Fuel pump: Walbro 255 in tank
Intake: Edelbrock Performer Vortec Distributor : Summit blueprinted HEI

Here is where I want some help. With the cam selection. It's a factory stall 4L60e truck, with a factory 3.42 gear and 29" tall tire. It is lowered 5"/7". I've pretty much narrowed it down to 2 different cams. I am open to suggestions, but do want a cam I can hear.

Cam 1: Comp cams xr270hr. It's 218*/224* @.050"--.495"/.503" on a 110* lsa 1600-5400 rpm.

Cam 2: Howard's Racing Cams 183215-10. It's 217*/225* @.050"--.495"/.500" on a 110* lsa 1300-5500 rpm.

I know these 2 are ridiculously similar, I'm just curious if there would be a big difference in the two? It just seems that most everyone raves about the lobes on the extreme energy line of cams from comp. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

You wouldn't be able to tell the difference between those 2 cams. Both will suck to drive around with the stock converter and 3.42 gears.

The stock converter stalls at around 1400 rpm in these trucks. Look for a cam with a powerband that starts 300-500 rpm less than that, or get a converter that stalls around 2000 rpm or higher for those cams you listed. The "ok with stock converter" line the cam companies use is meant for a much lighter car not a 4000lb+ truck. Even if you upgrade the converter, the 3.42 gears are still borderline too small. The flip side of this argument is, since you're coming from a "nearly shot" tbi engine, it will probably feel like a rocket ship no matter what you decide to put in it.

Oh ok, thanks for the input. So, those cams would work they just aren't ideal. Up to around 2000rpm it would probably be bucking, and wouldn't be able to decide what to do? What about the smaller comp cam? It's the xr264hr, 212*/218* .487"/.495" on a 110* lsa. 1200-5200

I believe that second cam is intended for small boost applications. If you drive it daily the xr264hr. Is there any vacuum issues with any of these cams. Almost .500 lift is getting close

I put a factory 1995 lt1 cam in my vortec
With edelbrock tbi intake and 1998 shorty headers so could retain the egr .
It runs pretty good until i put 35" tires on

i run a lunati pn# 20080642 in my truck and i love it. a little bit small but it pulls real good down low. And spring for the ignition control feature on your aftermarket tbi setup, it is worth the ease of tuning. like fitech's 30002
