Glad that didn't happen with someone in the passenger seat. Even without anyone riding shotgun it would still have been a brown pants moment if the airbag went off while driving!

Yikes! Looks like it blew off some of the upper dash also. Yes, a cubby and one of those custom formed plastic dash covers (DashSkin, DashTop, LMC's Coverlay, etc) would be a lot cheaper/quicker than replacing an entire dash.
FYI - 8600# burbans in 98/99 had airbag no cubby (no knowledge on 97)

Oh crikey. Yeah I see that hole on second glance. New dash it is.
I guess I'm also worried about whether the drivers airbag would still go off in the event of an accident.I can mail you the cubby from my old dash. Pretty sure it's still around. No need to replace that airbag or get a new dash.
There's a chapter on how to deploy the air bag in the service manual. If you decide to get rid of it.I guess I'm also worried about whether the drivers airbag would still go off in the event of an accident.
Not long for this world, unfortunately. Crack City with these dashes. Wasn't just an issue with GM, as just about every Ram and Dakota I had suffered the same issue within a couple of years owning them. Whatever happened to good ol' metal, eh?Yeah, it's not like the dash was mint anyways.
I'm sorta in the group of people who believe that airbags actually do help. There's a chapter on how to deploy the air bag in the service manual. If you decide to get rid of it.
Yeah, that's why I really like the '88-'94 dashes. Not long for this world, unfortunately. Crack City with these dashes. Wasn't just an issue with GM, as just about every Ram and Dakota I had suffered the same issue within a couple of years owning them. Whatever happened to good ol' metal, eh?
