98 GMC Sierra Fuel Pump Replacement

    I am looking to replace my fuel pump soon. I can hear it surging in and out while running at constant throttle, it is also 15 years old. Any recommendation of brand of pumps, install tips etc.

    AC Delco or Delphi.

    Get anything else, and you'll be doing it again, sooner than later.


    Put a NAPA one in my old Caprice (350, TBI), was on #3 when I sold it a year after the initial replacement. I used to keep a rubber mallet in the trunk to get me home in case.

    As far as install tips, people either drain and drop the tank, remove the bed, or cut a 12"x12" hole in the bed and make it into an access door.


    When the time comes for me, if I have a lot of gas in the tank, I'll remove the bed. Otherwise, drop the tank.

    Your going to get a lot of different opinions on remove bed vs drop the tank. Dropping the tank is easier IMO. Did mine by myself and it only took about 2 hours.

    If you do choose to drop the tank make sure it's as close to empty as you can get it. You'd be amazed how much fuel weighs lol.

    And remember that PB Blaster is gonna be your friend :)

    Did you have to replace the brackets when you put it back in place?

    I personally think it's easiest to unbolt the bed and slide it back a few feet. An impact and a 18mm socket make quick work of removing the bolts that fasten the bed to the frame, and doesn't take long to do at all.

    As for brand, as mentioned above; AC Delco or Delphi is the only way to go. Other tips, be sure not to bend the float or your gauge will not be accurate. Sand down the grounding point for the pump on the frame for a low resistance connection, and keep er' above a half tank after you replace it!

    On my current 96' no, but on my old 94' yes. They were so rusted I'm surprised the tank didn't fall out.

    As long as they are in good shape you should be able to re-use them.

    One other install tip, if your planning on re-using the sending unit be extra careful on the fittings for the fuel lines. Soak them in PB Blaster and don't wrench on them too hard or you'll end up snapping the line.

    On the 96-98 Vortec equiped trucks, the fuel sending unit and pump are one unit. If one goes bad you have to replace both. But on the 88-95 TBI trucks, that is a very good point. The lines coming out of the tank are often pretty brittle, and won't take much force to twist off or brake a line.

    You can replace just the pump, its just two plastic clamps that hold it into the sending unit IIRC. That's all I was going to do on mine until one of the lines snapped and then I had to go buy the sending unit minus a pump. Not trying to argue just telling you what I went through when I did mine. Unless the 96' differs from the later years for some reason.......
