I don't think they will fit in the cab behind the head mounts, I think I tried that in my 93 WT when I had it, but I am almost positive you can put 6x9s in the doors. My 97 has 6 inch ovals in the doors now, but I think with a little cutting I could put 6x9s. I know I have installed 6x9s in 2 of the 1973 to 1987 body style Chevy trucks That I have owned before. Also I replaced the 6x9s in the front doors of my wife's 2004 Toyota 4 runner. The doors of the 4 runner are not as deep as my 97 Silverado, all the more reason the 6x9s should fit in the doors.

I don't necessarily mean in the stock mounts behind the grilles, I mean more in the same location on the side wall, possibly mounted on top of the stock grille or something like that. I don't want to have to get creative with no guidelines so I just might build boxes. Both of my rear speakers are blown so I need something besides the sub back there

Personally I wouldn't do this. I doubt it will work, anyway. Speaking from experience with 96+ reg. cab stereos, there's not a lot of room in those rear mounts. You can get a decent set of 4" components with a 4x6 to 4" adapter or a set of 4x6 plate speakers that will work in the factory location and look a lot better. I'm not sure why everyone likes 6x9s so much. They'll give you a little more bass than a round speaker, but at the expense of sound quality. You say you have subs anyway, so I wouldn't bother. The rear speakers are really just there for supplementary fill anyway, your main focus for mids and highs should be your front speakers. Just my opinion, but I'd pass on those 6x9s and get something that will fit in the factory holes.

Alright then, any budget brands you would recommend? Nothing can be worse than blown stock 4x6s though.
I've always liked 6x9s because they look cool, but anywhere I can put them they won't be in view

To be honest most of my stereo projects have been upper end stuff so I'm not super familiar with budget brands these days, but I've been doing my Suburban up on the cheap with Kicker KS series components and I have to say for the price I'm very impressed with them. Check out the 41KSC454. Real rubber surrounds and really decent power handling for that size.

EDIT - Just noticed that these Polks are around the same price. These are actually a much better speaker on paper, and they have a round bass driver as opposed to the inferior oblong oval. I'd go with these.

Even those are a little high end for me since I'm still running the stock stereo and I only have the sub amplified, those 75 watts RMS are useless to me. They would match the sub, and aren't too expensive. I'll have to shop around a little bit I guess

Go with the polKS. Great sound. It's worth the money and will work with your stock stereo.

I like the Polks, too. I ran the older version of those in my first car and loved them. Like Scotty said they'll work fine with your stock stereo. The RMS power rating is maximum continuous, they'll work on less.

Yeah, I know what RMS is. I was referring to the 20w stock stereo will never touch the 75w you can sustain on those speakers. I'll have to look into the polks
