I did mean if it was carb or retaining EFI.
Even if it's a fun truck, I currently have a TH400 in my 3/4 ton with 4.10 gears and it runs around 3000rpm at 55mph. That gets old real fast if I ever want to get anywhere. I use almost a 1/4 tank making a 40 mile trip at highway speeds.

Personally I didn't like the 4.3 in an S10 so I never understood the full size application.

Even if you din't mind the RPM, the trans has a wider gear spread so you could gear deeper and the TCC keeps it cooler. Plus you can more accurately choose your shift points, the list goes on.

It's a different story if he's running carb and needs the TPS, MAP, etc to run the 4L80e. In that case the 400 turns out to be a far easier swap. Or run an expensive stand-alone controller.
Don't forget that you will need to run and control +12v to the kickdown solenoid for the 400. Not sure if they have a hydraulic option to get away from the electronic valve.

I'm just wanting to keep things simple, it's my first drivetrain swap and I don't want to get too crazy with it

Plus the 454 came with the 4L80E so it's just slapping a compatible stoxk setup in there

The frame will be pre-drilled to move the trans crossmember back. You will need to have the driveshaft shortened. It basically bolts right in.
