This is a 2008 transmission that slowly ran out of fluid due to a small leak in the cooler line. Filled it back up and it ran for a little while, but began to slip. 3rd gear eventually went and 2nd gear started to slip so the owner just removed the transmission and replaced it with another one.
I got it for $25 bucks, deciding to see what happened and possibly rebuild it.
The 3-4 clutch pack looks heated but not too worn or torched - as to not be able to move at all.
ALL other clutches are perfect and look new. The 2-4 band looks heated and worn a little, but not burnt up. The capsuled steel ball in the case for the 3-4 clutch does not leak...
Trying to figure out what caused this transmission to become in-movable, and looking at the not-so-bad condition of the 3-4 pack and 2-4 band - I checked the servo apply pin by disassembling the pistons and checking the pin for play. In doing so I discovered that the servo pin gets stuck when slid into the case (where the end would apply to the 2-4 band). There is a factory machine ridge that stops (or sticks)the pin.
See the attached pictures. The one with no pin shows the machine ridge (straight line in the bore as reflected with a flashlight). The one with the pin is how far the pin slides in before it gets stuck.
I am not a transmission specialist but i have ripped some apart and rebuilt them. I have a 1986 700r4, and this ridge is not there and the pin goes all the way through the bore.
Is this a factory machine defect that eventually caused the 2-4 band to loose grip?
Has anyone seen this?
