Yes light duty is what this vehicle will be all about. Longer European trips, it's good size for European roads, and if the economy is reasonable, might be a good fit. The Suburban is great, but off highway, too big. Does anyone have an idea of fuel mileage for one of these, driven sensibly? Not going to be deal breaker either way, but I am curious.

SUBURBANS. Thank you! cannot believe many hrs of searching on Youtube didn't turn that up. Any recommendations for where to buy parts for it in the USA, any specialist that people can recommend?

I don't have a Yukon but I get 14-15 mpg out of my 95 K2500. That is a mix of in town and highway with most of it in town. One the longest trip I took it on was about 600 miles I got about 18-19. But understand my truck has 4.10s for rear gears and a Yukon will have I'm guessing 3.73's or maybe 3.42's so that will change things a bit.

Depending on what parts you are looking for. Leroy Diesel and Quadstar tuning have specific parts for the 6.5. Other parts that are not engine specific you can get where you get parts for you Suburban. You can use regular parts stores as well for the engine but the 2 I mentioned are what I use when I need parts.

Don't listen to the diesel bashers. The 6.2/6.5 diesels were great motors. Built for economy not for power. I have owned one 6.2l and two 6.5l trucks. All three had 4:10 gearing, for pulling power. The last pick up, I had for many years. Pulled a big camp trailer all over with it. Empty and a mix of highway and city, always 19.8-9mpg. Pulling the 8000 pound fifth wheel, 15.6mpg.

Key to reliance is like everything, maintenance. I switched to full synthetic oils and gained mpg and reliability. A big help with the injectors, is adding about 1 ounce of 2 stroke oil per gallon of fuel. Helps to lubricate the injectors and gives a mpg gain of 1-3 mpg. Cleaning the "Cooling Stack" (radiator, oil cooler, trans cooler and condenser) is key to keeping everything cool. Cleaning the ground straps once a year.

The only real issues that need to be addressed in the factory set up, is the Pump Mounted Driver (PMD), a set of resistors that were mounted to the injection pump to keep cool, but didn't. Replace and move to the openings in the front bumper.

The oil cooler lines. The GM "snap fit" lines give out and will drain the oil pretty quickly, killing the engine.
The factory waste gate control is vacuum and the lines get brittle and break. I replaced the factory system with a mechanical system and never looked back.

I had other things I did to mine due to pulling a trailer. Gauges (Boost, EGT and trans temp). 5" exhaust and 4" air intake. Water injection to cool the air charge going into the engine. I added a programmed chip into the ECM to go from stock 120hp to 415hp at the fly wheel.

I hated to get rid of it but two kids and three dogs in an extended cab pick up just didn't work. Sold the pick up and fifth wheel and got a Suburban and bumper pull camp trailer. Best mileage I got in the Burb was 18mpg empty and most of the time I saw between 12 and 14. Where I live, gas is pretty bad. Most I have seen in Oregon is 8mpg. Sold the Burb and picked up a 2004 Crew Cab Long Bed Dually with the 6.6l Duramax. But I now pull a 15,000 pound boat. A 33' camper on the water.

I just bought a 97 Yukon with a 6.5, so far so good. I'm getting about 11L/100KM 40% city/60% highway driving running 3.73's. I am sure I can improve that if I keep it. I have been running 6.2s for the past 20 years and they have both been good to me. I am restoring my 91 with 750kms on it, I bought the Yukon to drive until I've completed the 91 project, I only hope it treats me as well as the rest have.

Gotta love Motor Week, they push every push, pull every lever, and show what every thing does.Several times over.

The boat company I worked for decided we were drivint just too darn fast, and put speed limiters on all the carry alls.69 mph and that was all.I wanted to put a sign on the trucks every time I drove one,"Sorry for the low speed,it's not my fault". But for whatever reason, they did'nt govern the one 6.5 Diesel Suburban we had.It was my favorite truck pf all of them!

And speaking of two door Yukon/Jimmy/Tahoe...
