How low should one go?

You should probably read through the "Stupid Lowered Questions" thread as these are things that have been asked a million times.

In short 4" is as low as you can go without a notch but even at 4" if you carry anything heavy it will bottom out on the axle.

actually it doesnt bottom out on the axle. the spring will tap on the rear most bed support with weight in the back.

i did a 2/4 on my 95 with spindles, hangers and shackles. all because i still wanted a "useable" truck.
not that it isnt useable, it just is kinda annoying to hear the spring tap the bed on large bumps.

ive "heard" a good 2nd option for 4" drop in the rear is a axle flip kit with a 1" LIFT shackle, and leave your stock hangers alone.

i kinda wish i did that way instead of doing the 2" drop hangers/shackles. cuz let me tell you, getting those stock rivets off with a air chisel is a MOTHER! plus it annoyed me that i had to drop the gas tank out of the truck to gain proper access.

Yeah I've never run a shackle/hanger combo because 4" would never be enough for me. With a flip kit and notch, if you run a heavy load, the axle is where it bottoms out. I have bent notch brackets to prove it.

That just doesn't even look good. He or she cut off all the flow of the truck. Not sure if the aim was to make it lower that everything else, or if there was another goal in mind. Not my cup of tea but someones.
