Anybody used the AGR box vs a factory quick ratio box (F41 Monte Carlo SS, WS6 TA) in their truck? It seems getting an AGR is 50/50 on being good out of the box. I can get a new reman F41 MC box for $150 delivered vs the $400 AGR box. Thoughts?

I wasn't aware that AGR was 50/50 hit or miss, but your chances with a reman box of whatever brand are about the same if not worse...IMO.

Had a local rebuilder put together a Q/R box for me. Couple o'hun.
Local rebuilder you can work directly with seems like the best route. That's gotta be a not very common thing!

I used to have a generator shop (yes, "generator", they'd been around that long!) I worked with whenever I needed alternator or starter stuff; they were by far the best. Dude even made a custom starter for me when I had a '54 Chevy that was converted to 12 volt but still had the 235 and 3-speed; he combined a few parts from what he had on hand and still gave me a great price on it. The original 6V starter had held up for a long time but all that double-time spinning finally had taken it out. Also once took him an alternator off a 9C1 Caprice that the nut had worked loose and let the fan/pulley wear out the shaft; instead of trying to sell me another alternator, he pressed on a fan/pulley from a Ford unit that had more shaft contact - sort of like those axle-saver wheel bearings. Man, I miss REAL shops like that...rapidly becoming ancient history.

Just like walking into a parts store that smells like a garage because of a machine shop on site. That is the same parts store that still uses paper catalogs and can identify most parts just by looking at them. Damn I miss those!

There's 2 here within a couple of blocks of each other, in an industrial area that caters to Big Rigs.
Fab shops, refridgeration parts & repairs, frame builders, suspension specialists.
Body shops with the required big paint booths.
2 dealerships. Kenworth & Freightliner.
Either one of those steering box rebuilders will do ones for damn near anything.

A quick google search will answer that for ya.

I know a couple people who have them and like them, but I'm not rich for one and two my truck is a DD and I can't afford to have it down several days to a week if the box has issues while I wait for a warranty return. And while a reman box can and probably will have problems I can always swap it locally until I get one that is good. Not a best case scenario but at least I can get it done in an afternoon if necessary.

I have a redhead quick ratio box and Love it!

I looked at their website the other day but they didn't have anything listed that would fit a GMT400. They look pricey but I can see why considering they hand match every worm gear to piston.
