Front inner axel snap ring

I can’t seem to get the gear to slide over the snap ring. Any tips to get this job done.

Make sure that the splines onthe axle shaft are not damaged. Align the gear splines with the axle splines and give it a firm smack with a dead blow hammer, some times they can be stubborn.

Make sure that the splines onthe axle shaft are not damaged. Align the gear splines with the axle splines and give it a firm smack with a dead blow hammer, some times they can be stubborn.
In your opinion is it better to have the snap ring in the gear or on the shaft before trying to hit it
