1996 Suburban 454 Never Ending Issues

I still haven't had anymore issues since replacing the starter and battery, but I'm going to check the battery cable anyways. Thanks for the suggestion.

1996 Suburban 454 Never Ending Issues

Thanks for checking on that for me. I think it might be the plunger on my original starter since it wouldn't "click", but if everything else looks pretty worn it's probably not worth it

1996 Suburban 454 Never Ending Issues

Update: I have replaced the battery and the starter and so far everything is good. The starter that was on it looks to be original, with 190K on it it is probably tired. I think I may try to rebuild it and keep it for a spare. Are the BBC and the SBC starters compatible with each other?

Aftermarket Engine Parts... Are they worth it? Not in my opinion.

I'll have to agree that aftermarket parts aren't worth it... well, most of them. I am still fighting with my suburban since I bought it last September, and most of my issues were caused by crappy aftermarket parts. It appears that the previous owner was fighting a problem (I think mostly...

1996 Suburban 454 Never Ending Issues

I had the ignition switch in my Alero go out last May. Cost me a head gasket, well... more like the car because I decided it wasn't worth fixing. The engine would run but no instrument cluster and no cooling fans (I learned afterwards). The instrument cluster on the suburban doesn't even dim...

1996 Suburban 454 Never Ending Issues

Well my suburban decided it was time to act up again. I went to start it last night, turned the ignition and nothing. Not even a "click". Swapped starter relay, nothing. Pulled the relay out and jumped the terminals and the starter turned over. Checked the fuses in the engine compartment...

1996 Suburban 454 Never Ending Issues

I'm a little embarrassed to share this, but decided to because there is a very good lesson here. On December 8th I posted about the crack on my hydroboost unit that happened because someone couldn't tighten a nut properly. Lesson #1: Inspect the brake system (at least a good visual) when...

I know this has probably been asked before...but caliper upgrades?

6 lug 2500 rotors are the same as 6 lug 1500 rotors (at least as far as 4WD goes). The "Heavy Duty" half ton (9.5 rear ring gear aka semi-float 14 bolt) is the same as the light duty 3/4 ton. This applies to front and rear axles, frame, control arms, etc. I doubt the 1 ton calipers will bolt...

1996 Suburban 454 Never Ending Issues

Speaking of spare tires, I had to use mine. The tread on it looked really good. Guess I'm the exception to that rule, haha. But the good news is I figured out why my tach went crazy. The connector for the crank sensor was bad. I crawled under there while the engine was running rough and...

1996 Suburban 454 Never Ending Issues

The gremlins strike again! I was towing a trailer up a hill and the engine stumbled for a second. I got my phone out and about a minute later caught the tach going crazy for a few seconds before the engine died. This is the first and only 454 I have ever driven/worked on. When it is...

1996 Suburban 454 Never Ending Issues

Today I tested the fuel pressure. It was 58, which is in spec. I installed the plenum, hooked up the wiring, and turned the key. It fired up easy and sounded like it was idling better. I put about 15 miles on it today and it seems like it has a little more power than it did, which makes...

1996 Suburban 454 Never Ending Issues

#6 fuel injector was pushed out of the rail and leaking. Got the injectors and harness swapped over to the new rail tonight. Also got the FPR installed. Before I bolted the rail on I checked for flow coming out of the fuel line and there was plenty. It was getting pretty late so I stopped...

1996 Suburban 454 Never Ending Issues

I have owned (and own) quite a few used vehicles, and I expect to have to do some work to them when I first buy them because I have a pretty high standard set for my vehicles, but I have never had one fight me this bad.

1996 Suburban 454 Never Ending Issues

The only code I am getting is for my rear O2 sensor I am missing. I will check again Thursday night when I start to tear into it again. Haha, Yup tried the first time to put it in without pulling the center oring out. It didn't fit. I bought a new injector rail since I busted off two of the...
