    @GoToGuy from other replies I have heard alternators should be good for operating all the way up to 250-300 degrees farenheit. assuming that is okay, i still do not understand the sudden voltage drop.

    Key off, battery rests at 12.6 volts. Sometimes takes 5 minutes other times takes 15. Hot as in above normal operating temp for the alternator. Too hot to keep my hand on for more than a couple seconds.
