Vss question

So my VSS has been acting up lately. Last night I changed it out last night. I took it for a test drive and all seemed well. This morning I am driving down the interstate and the speedometer is bouncing around but will settle down for a bit before jumping around again. The old one had some metal shavings all over it when I took it out. My question is , did I get a faulty vss or is there internal damage?
