Side swing tailgate

I wasn't too sure where to put this but i was wondering if anybody knew how to build a side swing tailgate. It's something I've been wanting to do on my truck but can't quite figure out how.

One time a guy in front of me in a 400 took off from a stoplight and the drivers side of his tailgate feel open, hinge and latch, passenger side was fine. As soon as I got next to him and got his attention it fell off... I'm sure you don't want to do it that way though
