my 97 2 door tahoe has factory installed fender flares, they are grey and the finish is worn off

it looks like they would be a pain in the ass to remove. I am wondering if anyone has ever sanded them down and painted them on the truck. I am wanting to paint them white to match the body color.

or is there a easy way to remove them?

I sanded mine down and painted them, but they weren't factory. I placed retainers in mine to keep it smooth looking, like these. http://www.clipsandfasteners.com/Fender_Bumper_Shield_Retainer_GM_Ford_Chrysler_p/a11146.htm

Most new vehicles with factory flares have these types of retainers, which you just slide into the hole and then push the pin down to secure. They actually hold very well.

You could use these easiest to pull them out. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CAR-AUTO-IN...051?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a28efaf4b
