So if someone can have a aftermarket air cleaner installed in there truck why do people chew me out for doing a lid flip? Does it not achieve the same job without aftermarket air cleaner.

lid flip is not helping any you are sucking hot are thats no good aftermarket air intakes can be good but if they do not have a box or heat shield(s) they are no good your lid flip will also make your air filter get dirty faster the factory ducting from the core suport to the iner fender is very restrictive and should be removed also get rid of the resonator/silencer get some tubing to go from the fender to your air cleaner or make your own air intake system the only true aftermarket cold air intakes for these trucks are made by volant and they are not cheap and are starting to get hard to find

another good option would be to search for a 454 tbi air cleaner and a tall lid carb air cleaner use the tbi base and the tall lid to fit a bigger air filter in also go on a search for 4.3 tbi truck it has the fender to air cleaner ducting that every one wants unlike the v8s the v6 did not use a resonator/silencer

Lid flips can make power on restricted systems, but they still lose power by sucking hot air. Aftermarket air cleaners also suck hot air, but it's an approachable modification for people who want to participate in car modding culture without doing anything potentially destructive. The fact that something large visually changes in the engine bay is a big plus here. See also: color matched plastic trim, punisher logo billet brake reservoir covers, etc.

Ideally you want unrestricted ambient temperature air sealed from the engine bay travelling in the same direction as the throttle body. Obviously packaging restrictions mean compromises from ideal, but allowing hot air in is fundamentally not the plan.
