Newbie with a motor question on a 1996

What other years are compatible with a 1996 GMT400? It's my son's trusk and I'm looking to make it as painless as possible for me to change.Thanks for any help

1996-2000 in trucks of the same bodystyle.

So, it has to look like his.

Van's run Vortec 5.7's until 02 I believe
