Im trying to locate an engine to replace my 176,000 mile 350 tbi. Within my price range, im considering a used low mileage L31 5.7 350 vortec, or a L98 5.7 350 TPI. I would be ditching the intake system on either for a carb style dual plane intake, and a new 46mm tbi. I know both are roller valvetrain, which is what i want. But differ in that the L31 is 4 bolt, L98 is 2 bolt. Also L98 is aluminum headed and L31 is iron. Also heard the vortec heads flow better. I believe they are both 9.5:1 compression. With the L98 having a slightly more agressive cam. Fueling system aside, which long block do you feel is the better choice? I also may planto drop in a more lopey cam. Truck will stay 5 speed. Used mostly for street driving, some towing, and maybe rarely some track use for fun.

The vortec heads are going to be much better. I'd go that direction.
