because, mine, when full is WAY right and as soon as it touches the coloration for E it will stall out and die on a decline...
is my gauge starting to go screwy after 20 years or do all GMTs read like this?...

I've never ran either of my trucks that low, that will kill a fuel pump. May sound crazy but the fuel (gasoline,) is what keeps the electric fuel pump cool. Run it down pass 1/4 or E to much and you start burning up pumps.

But to answer your question, I imagine all 400's are like this. Newer vehicles typically trick the guage to saying they are empty before they actually are.

Mine goes way far to the right of full, at least two needle widths. Then it drops down to half within a couple days. I can drive for a week between half and quarter. That last quarter usually lasts a while too, I've never run out of gas before. I have on a dirtbike, but it had a faulty carb and no gauges what so ever. My brother had to drive my truck to bring me gas. My buddy ran out of gas less than a mile from the gas station, he has a '99 (obs) Suburban 2500 with a 454. His fuel gauge is also inaccurate.

My fuel gauge also read a quarter or more low if I parked with the truck facing uphill.

When full and past the F mine will last a while. Once it hits the F it starts to go down by the minute it seems hahaha. I have run out of gas once and it was as soon as the needle hit the orange and I thought it meant I had another gallon or so to get to the gas station. I'll never let that happen again and I just know how many miles I can usually go on a tank and go off that

Mine reads accurately. At least as accurately as it is capable of.

Top of the filler reads full.

1/2 tank takes nearly exactly 1/2 capacity to full.

But I've had mine apart and done some fine tuning adjustments to it.

Mine is screwy. I had a 1/4 tank of gas when I replaced the fuel pump and sending unit. After the swap, it was on E. I took the bed off to change it, so I didn't loose that much gas. I fill up and it goes just past F, I can drive over a hundred miles before it starts to drop below F. I can maybe get another 100 between F and 1/2. Then it drops almost like a rock to E. Someday I will fix it. But for now I will leave it be.

Mine is pretty much the same than with several of you. When full, it will go over and beyond F and I guess it will be empty when reaching E - this I haven't tried; I was told way back that in American vehicles and especially in GM products E means empty and below last quarter will kill pumps. So, I always try to fill Red Dust and Caddy up as soon as I'm down to that last quarter.

This indeed seems different in Euros where warning light easily means a range of 60 or more miles, but I also try to fill up my Euros very soon after the student light appears.

I fill between 1/2and 1/4 tank.

Aerated diesel fuel and a stanadyne DB4 rotary injector pump DO NOT mix well.....
