Head gaskets

I have a 94 k1500 5.7l with a partially blown head gasket. Truck has 140xxx miles. Should i just fix the head gaskets on it or rebuild the whole motor?

How do you know its a bad head gasket? Did you do a proper compression and leakdown test? Or did a buddy say you had a bad head gasket?
