One thing I also love about the older stuff is the fact they can sit for a couple of months and still start. Many newer vehicles with all their parasitic modules and what not have dead batteries in a month or less, I have a few that will not start in 2-3 weeks if they sit. The old stuff can sit sometimes 2 or 3 months or more and still have a functioning battery. Actually just tested the 97 after it sat for the past ~45 days. It has been sitting at the shop because of the 4L85Es fluid leak I have yet to address. It usually does not sit more than a week or two at most.

My Burb was sitting in the same place since July, only getting run about once a month (if that often), and hadn't even had a battery in it since mid November. But I put a battery in it, fresh from Sam's Club as an exchange (but had been sitting on a board in my shop building since mid November) and it fired up with just a tap on the throttle. Since it has a fairly new fuel pump, that helps too.

What a sweet driver. Unless you've had one people don't understand what a nice comfortable ride they are. Being upgraded like you've done i bet it drives better than they did new

I bought a '79 G10 "Sport Van" a few years ago, was my first experience with one of those vans. Sat for twenty years, but I got it going, did the brakes at all four corners and put new tires on it. I was really impressed with how well the thing rode, equally impressed with the brakes. Had a straight six, THM350, power brakes, power & tilt steering, glass all the way around as well as the options that go with the Sport Van package. Never driven in the winter so it was clean. This was it just after I towed it home:

I love them things. Not a fan of pulling motors but I think they were easier than the next series. Straight 6 and a th350 would be a sweet ride. All of mine were g20 or g30. Even the g30 short i had with carb 350 and th400 road good. Had short 16.5 rubber and I think 456 gears. Kinda hard on gas. Most of mine were tbi 5.7 4l80 combos. With stock rubber and 410 or 373 gears they were good drivers and not too bad on fuel. I miss them lol

My 83 was a 305/700R4 and 3.08s. The 87 was a 305/TH400 and 3.08s. My 1992 was a 350/700r4 and 3.42s. My 1994 G10 shorty was a 305/4L60E and 3.42s. GM offered these vans with some tall highway gears in some models that really helped mileage on flat land combined with the TBI engines low-speed grunt. The standard (GQ1 RPO) gearing for a 1987 G20 with a 350 TBI and 700r4 was 2.73 for example.

I think mine were all G30. 373 gears with 4l80 and 245/16 is a pretty good all around combo

That is what my 97 Express is. Wish it had a 4.10 though. When I had the 350, it had a 5.13 in the 9.5. Loved the way it ran with a 5.13. 0-60 the 350 with a 5.13 would outrun the 383 with 3.73s in the 10.5 in it now. After the 5.13s were in it, the old L31 would get down with it.
