Fuel Gauge Issue

Fuel gauge works normally when filling up, about 40 miles later, it bounces and still goes down. At about half a tank, it just bounces and stays where it’s at and won’t work until I fill up again
I read it’s a common problem on these but don’t know exactly what it is or where to start

Could also be a stepper motor going out. I just ordered a new one off eBay for $39 shipped for my Tahoe.
