Currently trying to install a new distributor. Original just went out and let me stranded an hour and a half from home. Luckily a guy came out of his house and let me use his tools and the nearby napa had one in stock. I got it in close enough so that it would run but sputtered and drove home. Now I'm home, have the engine in tdc and have the distributor out. I'm trying to put it back in correctly the first time by following these guides:

http://www.gmtruckcentral.com/articles/distributor.html

http://www.eficonnection.com/24x/documents/24xSmallBlockChevyInstallation.pdf

Problem is where these distributors in the guides have a #8 stamped on the outer plastic ring I have a #6, and where they have a #6 I have a #8. The metal part that the rotor mounts to has the #8 stamped in the same spot.

Question is, should I orient it so the 8 on the rotor mounts lines up with the 6 on the outer ring which would copy the alignment in the guides, or should I align it with the 8 which would make sense but is contrary to the alignment in the guides?

Here is a pic of my distributor:

also the paint marking on the bottom of the shaft that lines up with the indent flaked off :(

So I guess I only have the top orientation to go by now.

Also this is a 98 Silverado with the 5.7l automatic

I wanted to give it a shot before it got dark out, so I went ahead and installed the distributor per this guide http://www.eficonnection.com/24x/doc...stallation.pdf which had me lowering the distributor in oriented towards the #6, or what would be the #8 on the distributors pictured. Trucks seems to run perfectly. I took it around the neighborhood and revved it out. No issues.

I'd done a lot of work to the front end recently and crawled under to make sure everything was still bolted down tight and what not. Then something dripped on my face. Coolant is leaking from my intake manifold. Nice.
