Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. UHMWPE.
Odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic. Food safe. You can eat it! (but, why?)
It is highly resistant to corrosive chemicals except oxidizing acids.
Has an extremely low moisture absorption and a very low coefficient of friction.
Self-lubricating; and is highly resistant to abrasion, in some forms being 15 times more resistant to abrasion than carbon steel.
Its coefficient of friction is significantly lower than that of nylon and acetel, and is comparable to that of polytetrapolyethylene (PTFE, Teflon), but UHMWPE has better abrasion resistance than PTFE.
It's all around in many things that are used daily.
Skiis, snowboards, skate boards, cut resistant gloves, bow strings, fishing line, rigging lines for kites, paragliders, parachutes, yachts. Body & vehicle armor, synthetic ice rinks, cutting boards, used in joint parts & total hip replacements, bearings & gears, etc, etc,.
The best man for my wedding is an industrial plastic company rep. Over 30 years. He used the office in my shop as a satellite of the Co.'s plant, 300 miles away, for more than a few years.
I learned this stuff by default!
