it's most likely the sensor because the gear shouldn't be in direct contact with anything

You dont happen to have an exploded diagram or anything of this gear do you? I'm trying to get in my head what it looks like. And figure out how hard it would be to change if needed. To me it acts more like the gear is stripped out because it only fails under a lot of stress.
