So i purchased a front differential off a friend to rebuild for my truck. Im putting 4.56 gears in it with the stock carrier with new spider gears. I dont have a pinion depth guage so i have to guess and check. Anybody done ones of these before or know what shim i need to use?

Every case is different so that can't be answered. Buy an extra pinion bearing and open it up to use as a set-up bearing.

Could i use the old bearing? Or would it be best to buy a new one?

Yes, you can use the old one. Just need to open it just enough so it slides on with little effort. If you make it too loose, then it will be no good. You can get pinion depth by removing the old pinion bearing from the pinion shaft and measure the shims that are on it. That will give you a good base to go from.
