Is there a steering shaft available for the later trucks (97-00) that has the u joints instead of the ragged out junk that GM used?

You can use a flaming river joint part #FR1746DD to replace the rag joint entirely. There is a how to here: http://www.gmtruckcentral.com/articles/steeringadjustment.html the joint only replacement is at the bottom. The general consensus here is not to use that borgnson shaft because 97+ has a u joint at the end of the column before it exits the firewall an using that shaft gives you three joints so it needs extra support between the two.

Another member found this recently an it should just replace the rubber part of the rag joint. It says its for a camaro but according to the replacement rag joints a camaro an a 400 are the same.

If you decided you wanted to do the full shaft look into the jeep xj shaft, it is discussed here:

An here it talks about having 3 joints

Again I don't recommend it because of the three joints issue though...
