PS. @df2x4 @kennythewelder - I assume the same O.D. applies to the MY 1999 Burbs, right?

    The Stupid Axle Questions Thread

Oh my God, thank you my good fellow! I was researching this until midnight local time and got away from my keyboard pretty confident it's 2.891" O.D. (but not 100 percent sure at the time). I discovered this kit is also 2.891" - Richmond Gear 83-1021-1 and includes Timken bearings and races.

    The Stupid Axle Questions Thread

1996 GM 10-bolt 8.5 axle (I assume it's the K1500 bone stock axle specs): What is the bearing race O.D. on these if I wanted to replace the wimpy G80 with a True Trac? (It's important... I need to import the right bearing kit from the States.)

If stuck with a healthy L05 TBI... Options for 'go-faster' and improved fuel economy?

Indeed, a word of explanation: I am zeroing in on a minty transition year, which is supposedly a 96, with the transfer case shifter on the floor, no pass-side air bag, and the L05 under the hood. And yes, I'm still learning. GM newbie here, was a Chrysler/FoMoCo owner before that (well, a...

If stuck with a healthy L05 TBI... Options for 'go-faster' and improved fuel economy?

That is not incorrect. It would mean the 3rd row seat out of the car most of the time, as I have planned anyway... ...and let's keep Spontaneous Weight Removal by Oxidation™ out of this equation! :D

If stuck with a healthy L05 TBI... Options for 'go-faster' and improved fuel economy?

Oh, cool, good to know! (The Polish import duties are gonna rape my wallet again, LMAO!)

If stuck with a healthy L05 TBI... Options for 'go-faster' and improved fuel economy?

It's all about the money. Someone might or might not have a kit down here. Any recommendations?

If stuck with a healthy L05 TBI... Options for 'go-faster' and improved fuel economy?

Sorry for the monologue here, but I got a couple ideas browsing this awesome forum. Better air delivery: should I shave off the TBI ridges around the ports below the fuel meter? What about a different cleaner? If the ridges are removed, should I go with a taller air cleaner or nah, since a...

What to expect from a '98 K1500 with 237,000 mi on it...?

... I also stumbled upon this one. Sacramento, CA. Supposedly clean and everything works (my friendly car import company already contacted the seller). 160k mi on the odo, very agreeable. I'd have to pay just as much as for the white one in Germany... Minus cleaning...

If stuck with a healthy L05 TBI... Options for 'go-faster' and improved fuel economy?

TBH, I never investigated mpg loss on a TBI engine, good point here. My experience with running aftermarket LPG is limited to multipoint EFI (one LPG injector per cylinder). Got great results with a 239 HP Ford Modular 2-valve V8 in my last car, an MGM LS HPP; the mpg on LPG dropped to a bracket...

If stuck with a healthy L05 TBI... Options for 'go-faster' and improved fuel economy?

Oh, sweet! Thanks, guys! I probably went ahead myself and used AcDelco's RPO decode list that's online and explains nearly all codes on the RPO I got yesterday from a prospective seller of a darn clean L05 '05-to-06 (the weird MY that had the 'new' instrument panel assy without the...

What to expect from a '98 K1500 with 237,000 mi on it...?

That was my plan, I can get the whole identically optioned out driver's seat with the leather intact for about 100 bucks out here. Other than that, the car needs deep cleaning and resto of the plastic trim bits... 500 bucks or more at a good shop here.

If stuck with a healthy L05 TBI... Options for 'go-faster' and improved fuel economy?

I guess you figured it out I've already eyed out a specific L05 vehicle. The RPO sheet says I'm already good with the gears and brakes, I think. The Burb is not an export/Euro/GCC build; someone imported a US version here, so I guess no HLC was enabled (tho the GMT400 Tahoes and Burbs used to be...

    So, this happened. Thoughts?

Can this be flushed out safely with Diesel?

What to expect from a '98 K1500 with 237,000 mi on it...?

Great! BTW, the lowest temps we see here is -4 F on a VERY cold night (it's usually 14 F-ish). Would it make sense to grab a T-stat for that cooler?

If stuck with a healthy L05 TBI... Options for 'go-faster' and improved fuel economy?

I am actually considering a RAR change, as I'm looking into an LSD for that car; L05 means a Burb w/o stock electronic traction control, and we all know what G80 is like.

What to expect from a '98 K1500 with 237,000 mi on it...?

So, probably a 10k BTU or bigger trans cooler for starters, plus a trans fluid gauge?

    Rust prevention

Three cents from me: NHOU, Krown Canada, Fluid Film (Germany) and the good old redneck lithium grease thinned out with Diesel slathered over the rocker panels that live beneath those usual plastic covers are the tricks up my sleeve that I've tried, if you mean bare metal or superficial rust...

If stuck with a healthy L05 TBI... Options for 'go-faster' and improved fuel economy?

19 mpg would be very neat. Hell, 18 mpg-ish sounds very good, too (my regular long distance drive is hwy, 70 mph 2/3 of the way). 5 speed, that's a stick shifter, right? You also got a pickup truck... A Sub adds several hundred pounds of good ol' Murican steel to GVWR, a considerable factor when...

If stuck with a healthy L05 TBI... Options for 'go-faster' and improved fuel economy?

As in the post title. What are the entry-level options for going, errr, a BIT faster and enjoy better fuel economy with the L05? (Yeah, I know how it sounds, but 2 mpg more would be an improvement, right?) I figure - a TB spacer, improved flow intake manifold, and better exhaust headers would...

What to expect from a '98 K1500 with 237,000 mi on it...?

Some background here: I'm not in the States, I live in Europe (Poland, specifically), and out on the market for a nice GMT400 K1500 SUV now. Not many options here, most of the finds are downright sh*tboxes 2 wheels in the junkyard, the remainder is very overpriced, with the condition/rebuild...

    Amcar enthusiast from Poland here!

Thanks, guys! Speaking of one-year weird things... Yeah, I already read about those somewhat. Given this opportunity, should I be aware of anything else, specifically, about a 95-96 K1500 with 160,000 miles to consider in the "service-after-purchase" budget? (Yes, the Polish currency is tanking...

    Amcar enthusiast from Poland here!

I was considering a GMT 900 at first, but the more I learned about different gens of the platform, I moved 'back in time' towards GMT 800... Which would be very nice to own if not for a short supply of used ones here, and owning one being chomped up by rust, and being a 20-yo GM with electrical...
