So to start 1993 GMC K1500 5-speed. Recently found out the engine is from an automatic vehicle of the same era 1987-1993 305 or 350, unsure but probably a 305. I'm just trying to keep this thing running reliably for cheap until I can swap it out for a built 350 sitting in my garage next summer.

The problem is that since I started driving it again this summer it has a random no-start issue, It sat relatively unused for 2 years while I was tinkering on it. I can watch the injectors not fire or fire with the air cleaner off. But I cannot reproduce the problem if it doesn't want to show it to me. I had to take the air cleaner off in a parking lot and watch the injectors when it didn't want to start one day. Cold or hot, it doesn't matter, its really random.

If I leave the key on the 'on' position without cranking it over for 5-10 seconds it will start every time but sometimes if I try to just crank it over then it will give me the no-start problem randomly. And once it doesn't start I cant do the 5-10 second trick anymore, it just doesn't want to start at all unless I spray starting fluid down the throat.

In the past 3 years I have the following new:
-Fuel pump
-Fuel tank
-Fuel filter
-Rebuilt TBI
-Throttle Position sensor
-Coolant temp sensor
-Ign Cap and Rotor (not fuel related but they're new)

And I just recently did the 'Quarter mod' trick to the FPR to increase fuel pressure which I thought resolved the no-start problem for a couple days until it happened again.

The weird thing is that when I watch the injectors they either work or don't work, there is no in between. they either spray a perfect cone of fuel during cranking or absolutely nothing at all. When I was watching the problem I had my girlfriend crank over the truck immediately, then 1-second delay, then 2-sec delay, then 3, and 4, etc and around a 6-7 second delay with the key paused in the 'on' position the injectors fired a perfect cone of fuel from both and it started.

This has me really stumped. Thanks for the help and ideas in advance!

Hook up a fuel pressure gauge, turn the key and see if you get 13-15psi for 5 seconds then it drops to 0.

Also i'd give that ignition module a look.(the guy with 2 connectors under the dizzy cap) When they fail they can cause an intermittent no spark and/or no fuel issue. Could also be you ignition pickup coil.

I know it sounds silly, but its probably the ignition module. I had this very issue in 2012, drove us nuts. The module will stop the injectors from firing. I know its crazy, but it will run with ether with a bad module and this module will test good, but it is not. hope this helps

Check INJ A&B Fuse, not only the fuse but check if it have reliable 12 volts with key on, also check fuse slots for tight contact. But i agree c1500deathtrap and 1bigwilliestyle, it is a clasic fail from Ignition Control Module
