I just purchased a 92 Silverado. The stock radio does not work but it has an in dash deck radio, if thats the proper way to call it. It looks like it is installed correctly, but i tried taking it off, and the whole unit comes out of where the deck is located. I am concerned that it could easily be stolen. I want to know if it is worth trying to get the stock radio to work again, or just keep the in dash deck and hope for the best. Also i do not like where the in dash deck is located. It is to far away from the driver's position.

I'd take a look behind the stock stereo and see if it was just unplugged. If so, plug it in and see if it powers on.

Wasn't the stock radio two pieces...the head unit in the dash and the receiver unit (proper name?) installed inside the dash somewhere?

Yes, the receiver unit or whatever its called is mounted in the dash, to the right of where your right knee would be if you are in the driver's seat. Its kind of buried, but if want a stock radio to work it has to be connected to that.

Stock radio is 2 or 3 pieces depending if you have the tape player or not.

The main unit is in front of your right knee towards the firewall. There are 2 7mm bolts holding it. One on the firewall and one on the lower dash frame. If you drop the panel under the column and look right you will see it.

The top display will have a lead that runs to it as will the tape player. All of the wiring for the truck is on top of it.
