yes you have a short some where. the only advice i can give to you is the best way to find a short is to wire a headlight or brake light and socket into the 4x4 fuse holder. just slip the wires into the holder where the blade of the fuse would go.

the ground for the pump is in the connector which then runs back into the harness
if you remove the bed which forces you to remove the ground attached to the frame it will still start just fine

right now my 95 with 194K on it, winter startup is 65#'s and after running to work which is 15 mile 1/2 back roads and 1/2 interstate it still hanging out around 25 to 35#'s at idle

you should be able to tighten the nut that is holding the post itself, there should be one that would be under the battery cable terminal
