There is NOTHING like the torque of a built big block! NOTHING!!! Skin on your face pulling back, eyeballs sucked to the back of your skull, heart pounding in your chest, & that hundred $ bill on the dash that you know your passenger CAN'T reach! Heaven & Hell on wheels! I REALLY miss mine, but not the mileage!
What did you have that in?

While back in the day there was no substitute for displacement and raw power, nowadays through technology and better understanding of what REALLY makes a drivetrain combination powerful there's no use for such old technology. 30 years ago it was unthinkable to have a slightly modified truck running 10s in the 1/4, now they're easily build able. Infact there's a well known little blue NBS that does it with only a cammed 5.3L.
You can have all the torque in the world, but unless it's matched to the proper gearing it's useless. Not to mention the weight disadvantage. A modern LS 6L with a fairly aggressive cam and otherwise stock components will make your jaw drop when it's tuned properly and matched with a torque converter that utilizes all of said power. It's quite amazing really. Guys are building 500+ hp engines all day long on less than a $1500 budget. The blue truck pictured above only had an LQ9 with a fairly streetable cam, but was tuned to near perfection. It WOULD run rings around any N/A 427 combination of yesteryear, and get 21mpg while doing it. :read:
