5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

bump, gonna put the new cap in today

    How much paint?

Good, cause I just bought urethane instead lol

    How much paint?

I tested it out, Rustoleum rattle can primer is compatible with High Teck urethane basecoat.

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

Should I be worried about timing or anything being off, since i had cranked it a little bit with it only running on one cylinder? Or will i be good to go once the new (quality) cap is in?

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

So I recently found out about a trick where you unplug plug wire 3 and if it starts right up, you got a bad distributor cap. Well guess what IT STARTED RIGHT UP after I did that. Blue distributor cap on the way. I would be lost without the wizards in this forum ahahaha

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

I have started to also get occasional backfires while cranking it, as well as occasional clunks. No start still. Pretty sure it has to be something ignition or timing related. My neighbor mentioned a worn starter, but would that make it backfire? I’m starting to think it’s a slipped timing...

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

It was a blue spark, and yes the coil is sending spark thru the wire as well.

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

I should mention that when I did that test, the coil wire was plugged into the cap and not the ignition coil. Because of this, I wanna say the cap and rotor are good for now. Should I repeat this test with it plugged in oppositely? It has to be something that, if it went bad, would make all 8...

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

Good news, ignition coil does spark. So does that mean that the rest of the ignition system is fine, just the spark isn’t getting to the plugs? Or could it still be a cam/crank sensor?

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

How long should I (or the other person) have to crank it to see a spark? I don’t want to crank it unnecessarily long

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

I’ll just have it held in place under the trans fluid lock tab. Unless this is dumb?

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

I’ll try the coil method, should I also unplug the electrical connection for the coil and the ignition module? I heard it can be hard on them to crank with distributor wires unplugged.

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

Sry for the dumb questions but this is while someone else is cranking the engine right? And what will it tell me if I do/don’t get a spark?

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

What do you mean jumps? So I unplug the coil wire and see if a spark comes out of it?

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

All the sensors that the scanner would display data for (with KOEO) seem to be giving good readings. Yes distributor spins when you crank it. And starter fluid doesn’t seem to help it, so that rules out a fuel delivery issue.

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

I can see from the scan tool that those 2 sensors are still giving readings, so they aren’t the cause of my crank no start. I also noticed smoke coming out out the intake after cranking it. It smelled a little like fuel but I’m not totally sure, could be oil. I occasionally hear a clunking...

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

They are a little corroded, and I will replace them with the blue ones later on, but i dont think they're causing my no start problem, so they arent a huge priority right now. Its a lot more urgent that I get her running. The truck is giving 2 codes: for MAF and for throttle position. I am going...

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

I’ll keep that in mind. But do those pictures look normal? Or should I be worried about the colors of the contacts in the cap?
  19. slow_c1500

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

My cap and roto look like this. Is it normal, and if not, could this cause a crank no start?

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

hey guys, I pulled the upper intake today to confirm for sure that my fairly new spider/reg aren’t leaking. They are not. After doing this, it would crank but not start at all. Truck is getting adequate fuel pressure and I can hear the pump whine for 2 sec when key is on. Is it possible still...

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

Got it. Ive heard that Walbro (as long as its not counterfeited) makes good fuel pumps for these trucks. Does anyone know what Walbro pumps fit a 5.7 vortec? Btw the motor is stock, so I don't need crazy fuel pressure.

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

Newbie question, but if my check valve did happen to be leaking, would I replace just the cylinder-looking thing that I circled? Or that entire pump assembly? Anything else I should think about replacing while I would be in there?

5.7 Vortec intermittent long crank --> crank no start, backfires, clunking

Same exact issue? Where it starts fine overnight or less than 15ish minutes? Ill still take the upper intake off to inspect injectors/regulator to be totally sure (i can get it apart in 15 min lol), and if they are fine, I will be convinced that its the fuel pump.
