I did the swap many months ago and it improved slop greatly. However now the two halves of the shaft are loose from eachother and slop is back. What can I do to fix this but not compromise the safety aspect of it?

Ok so the upgrade is a ujoint instead of rag joint. The upgrade id like to know is what other steering box has people used that had quicker ratio and doesn't wear out ad fast as standard obs Chevrolet boxes? My current one is a 96 k1500 and its stock 300k box but its in need of another. My last k1500 i used a 2wd box that was a 85k mile truck and it got slack in couple yr time.

I drilled and tapped the upper tube and used 2 small set screws to take up that slack. It is nice and tight, but will still collapse with force (I tested this with a deadblow before installing it for proof of concept).

So its a basically a reworked stock deal. I dont get what the difference in 88 and 98. I have a 98 k1500 box on a 90 k2500 and it went right on, even pitman same.

You have several to choose from. Some with quicker gear ratios, ECT. I will say this, I am on my 4th reman gear box from ORilleys. I couldnt get my wife to shut up about the sloppy steering, so I changed the box, well it was the rag joint, not the box. The first replacement box was cracked. It took me forever to figure it out, because it was such a small slow leak. I even welded the crack, but no mater what I did, the leak just kept coming back. The second box was good at first, but started leaking from the front cap, where they take it apart to repair it. The third box was the same thing. The 4 box in there now, seems to be ok for now. It has been in the truck for a few years with no issues. IDK if the EVO system messing up had anything to do with the other boxes leaking or not. I replaced my PS pump with a pump that has the EVO bypass pipe, so U
I have no more EVO in the truck, just regular old power steering. Poke around the redhead sight, and you will see several boxes to choose from. If you get a reman box from anywhere else, well good luck. I hope you dont have as many issues as I did. I bet they is as cheap parts that they can when they rebuild these boxes. China parts and gaskets, but thats just a guess
