Looking for water pump advice. 88 GMC c1500- I’m replacing the original water pump. Seems like opinions on replacing with OEM(AC Delco) vs cheaper brand are mixed. Decided to go with new $160 AC Delco from Oreillys. I received it today and it’s definitely not perfect from a looks standpoint. You can tell the paint isn’t consistent, so makes me wonder if I should use it or go with another one. If QC doesn’t even monitor the outside finish, did they really monitor the internal parts?
Anyone have thoughts or experience?

I have also heard of Arthur Gould rebuilders.

What is best route- use the one I bought; get another ACD; buy a cheaper brand; or get my original rebuilt??

Also, any special tricks on getting the old gasket off of engine?

Thanks in advance!!

Where's the AC Delco made? When I was looking for one for my 454 a few years ago, I was finding them made in China.

If you need the truck back on the road now, I'd suggest getting a cheap Chinese pump from wherever. If it's a project vehicle, get your original rebuilt. Either way, i'd hang onto the original and get it rebuilt eventually. I wish I had let mine. I got tired of it being underfoot, and got rid of it.

This one says made in Mexico. It’s a project truck that I’m almost finished with, so not my daily driver. May just send it off and have it rebuilt.

Thanks! Excuse my ignorance, but what is NOS? I’ve seen that in several places and didn’t know what it meant.

New Old Stock. Like original GM parts made when these trucks were new or soon thereafter.

It's a water pump not a crankshaft. You already own it.

Stuff it in place, see what happens. Worst case, you pull it back off and potentially take advantage of the warranty.

If this was me--and it isn't, but it could be--I would grab a used OEM pump off of a core engine (and fresh gaskets) before I dropped $160 on Chinese-sourced water pumps. But I'm not really averse to installing a used water pump, and some folks are.

Many of them come just raw cast iron with no paint at all, and you paint it yourself. It's not a piece of styling; it's a functional engine component.

Last one I bought for a gmt400 came from Carquest right before Advance bought them out. Carquest branded box, new/not rebuilt. Got it to replace a NAPA branded new/not rebuilt that had failed with a bearing squeal, got replaced under warranty, and brand new one squealed right out of the box. :(
