After I read this I ckd a chevy website for older generations, they were saying that there have been 7 boltholes since the start of the smallblock, they were thinking it was there for strength because some of those applications had trans mounts that were bolted to the bellhousing and probably you can buy aftermarket bellhousings that have the extra bolt hole .
You certainly Can buy a new bellhousing with all Seven bolt holes.

Also, related to the trans mounts that bolt up to rear face of block --- there is also a "motor plate" and a "mid-plate" --- those are currently de rigueur in many older and present-day race classes and function as a motor mount and in lieu of conventional motor mounts. --- also, there's a "block plate" that's employed to help prevent blown-up flywheel/clutch shrapnel from busting the rear face of block.

I think all SBC blocks have the 7th hole but not all transmissions do. Many older GM vehicles only run 6 bellhousing bolts and it works fine. GM did seem to start adding the top hole to more transmissions (4L80s at least) in the late 90's or so.

No telling where the extra bolt came from. Almost all the block holes are 3/8-16. Intake, distributor, accessory brackets, etc. If not missing anywhere maybe someone replaced already

Go back in time far enough and the Powerglide had seven bellhousing bolt holes. My '66 Biscayne had all seven bolts in place...

...Well, until I followed everyone's advice about six bolts, and busted the top bolt hole off of the Potatoglide bellhousing.

Anybody have advice on installing the transmission dipstick tube on a 92 k2500 with the 700r4? I can’t seem to get it to fit no matter what I do and I really don’t want to pull the transmission back just to get it put back in

I would combine all threads on your 700R4 as they all cover at least one or more aspects of the installation and sustainment/maintenance on a go-forward basis. It would make a good source of information for anyone else in your shoes; someone who either had their trans rebuilt or purchased a reman unit and now must DIY reinstall it correctly, fill with fluid, set up and adjust the TV cable, validate adjustments are correctly done via pressure testing and then mantaining the unit, including regular service intervals...Could be made a sticky so it's easy to find.

Anyone looking to rebuild their 700R4 can visit my and a couple other threads that cover overhaul and then go to yours for reinstallation, etc.

@kennythewelder - is this possible to do, assuming @Westcreek doesnt have any strenious objections?
There is already a 700R4 thread. If y'all want me to move post, into that thread, I can do that, but I need a link to what y'all want moved.

Installing the old transmission mount as I didn’t check the box and got an engine mount not a transmission mount. I am trying to figure out if the bolts that go into the transmission are supposed to go all the way into the tail housing or if they are supposed to sit out a bit. I can only tighten the bolts within 1/4” or so from being snug with the transmission. They are rusted bad enough at the last 1/4” that the threads are gone. This makes me think it was exposed but this would leave the transmission with 1/4” gap to lift up on the mount. Is this correct or is something wrong here?

Can we pretend you didn't say you were install the hardware loose so it can bounce up and down and eventually break off . Get new hardware. Don't reuse old crap hardware. Hardware is cheap compared to damaged transmission part. And the time to redo the whole job a second time. Hardware does its job, but some point it's out lived it's useful life. Personally, good hardware is cheap insurance for good quality repairs.
Good luck!

I’m not saying that I want to intentionally install it loose, I’m asking if it is supposed to go completely snug or not as it doesn’t look like the old hardware was originally tight to the mount. I will be getting new hardware and a new mount, I just needed to get this put together so I can make sure the trans and everything works properly

I put a new TV cable in my 700R4 and when I went to attach it to the throttle body it was too tight for me to get it on. I had to press the button in to release it and pull the cable out a bit more. I got the cable on and pressed the button and pushed the adjuster as far in as I could. I tried to pull the throttle by hand to adjust it, but it was too tight and I couldn't get it to move. I went in the truck and pressed gently on the gas pedal and still nothing. I applied some more force gradually and it finally lurched into place. I checked it afterwards and it was very tight. I drove the truck and the 1-2 shift was at 12-14 mph. My builder said I should be seeing around 18-20mph for the 1-2 shift based on my setup (3.42 gears, 245/75/16 tires). Would the cable being too tight cause early shifts? Do I just press the button in and ratchet it out another step to make the cable a little bit looser or is there something else I need to do to fix it? Also, does anyone know the torque spec for the little bolt that holds the TV cable in?

Put a gauge on it before you burn up the trans!

Here, Nick shows the pressures you should see...
